Adoption Process

Finding the right
home, together.

Our adoption process helps us understand you, your setup and the kind of hamster who could thrive in your care.

What to expect

We look at every application individually. Our aim is not to catch anyone out; it is to create safe, lasting matches and support adopters from the very beginning.

1

Step 1: Check our adoption standards

Before applying, make sure you can provide the enclosure, wheel, multi-chamber hide, platform and enrichment required for the hamster you are interested in.

2

Step 2: Meet the hamsters

Read each profile carefully, including personality, location, transport options and any individual requirements.

3

Step 3: Submit your application

Tell us about your experience, household, planned care and the hamster you would like to adopt. Please answer as fully as you can.

If you require full or partial delivery, let us know on your form. We can then discuss if this is something we can offer. Please note that delivery is charged at 28p per mile round trip to cover our volunteers' fuel.

4

Step 4: Reserve your matched hamster

In order to reserve your chosen hamster, we require clear photos of the enclosure (even if it is still empty!), the wheel, a fully enclosed multi-chamber hide with at least 4 chambers and a free-standing platform.

Once these photos have been reviewed and accepted, your hamster is reserved! You will have up to seven (7) days to complete your setup to our adoption standards.

5

Step 5: Show us your setup

This is the super fun part - getting your enclosure for your new hamster! Make sure to refer to adoption standards for the checklists of what an enclosure needs!

We also have a super helpful product library, which lists rescue-approved products for every item type on our checklists and where to buy them!

Once your setup is ready, pop over a photo for approval, and once everything's gotten the green light, we can arrange an adoption date!

6

Step 6: Adoption day!

Adoption day is here! When collecting your hamster, all you will need to bring is an empty carrier - don't worry, we will provide bedding from the hamster's foster enclosure to go in the carrier, along with a bag of bedding to take home to help transfer the hamster's scent to their new enclosure.

Remember, it is vital to let the hamster decompress and truly settle in their new home. As such, we advise leaving them alone in the new enclosure for 7 days, aside from ensuring fresh water, food and necessary care.

Adoption Donation

£20.00

A non-refundable adoption donation is due at least 48 hours before the agreed-upon adoption date. It helps support the next hamster who needs Fable's.

Before your hamster comes home

Setup Changes

We may request changes to your proposed setup to make sure it meets our adoption standards and the individual hamsters' requirements.

Adoption dates are only arranged once final setup is approved.

Travel Confirmation

If you require part-way or full delivery, this is capped at 3 hours and subject to volunteer availability.

We ask for a donation of 28p per mile round trip to cover the volunteers fuel for delivery.

Care Information

You will recieve the  hamsters known history, routine and relevent care information.

All hamsters are weighed and health checked on adoption day. We pack as much from their foster setups as we can.

How decisions are made

The right match matters more than being first

Welfare comes first

We prioritise the hamsters' welfare and long-term wellbeing.

Every hamster is an individual

We carefully consider personality, needs and the right environment for each hamster.

Approval is based on the full application & setup

We look at the whole picture to ensure a safe, lasting match.

A note about reservations

A hamster is only reserved once Fable's has confirmed this with you. Expressions of interest, messages and submitted applications do not place a hold on a hamster.
