Choosing Safe Wooden Products for Your Hamster

A Guide to Wood Types, Plywood & Certifications


More Than Just Wood

Wooden accessories are a staple of most hamster enclosures. Platforms, multi-chamber hides, sand baths and bridges all help create an enriching environment that encourages natural behaviours such as burrowing, climbing and exploring.


However, not all wooden products are created equal.


The type of wood, how it has been manufactured, the adhesives used and any finishes applied can all affect whether a product is suitable for long-term use in a hamster enclosure.


The good news is that choosing safe wooden products doesn't have to be complicated. By understanding a few key principles and buying from transparent, reputable manufacturers, you can make informed decisions with confidence.


What Should You Look For?

When choosing any wooden accessory, we recommend looking for products that:

✔ Clearly state the wood species used.

✔ Are made from untreated solid wood or quality plywood.

✔ Come from a manufacturer who is transparent about their materials.

✔ Use recognised low-emission engineered wood where plywood is required.

✔ Are free from unnecessary paints, stains or varnishes unless these are clearly identified as animal-safe.

✔ Are well constructed, with no exposed glue, sharp edges or loose joints.


If a manufacturer doesn't tell you what materials they've used, it's perfectly reasonable to ask. Reputable businesses should be happy to explain exactly what goes into their products.


Solid Wood or Plywood?

Many owners assume solid wood is always the safest option.


In reality, both solid wood and plywood can make excellent hamster accessories when manufactured from appropriate materials and by reputable manufacturers.


The most important consideration isn't whether something is solid wood or plywood, but whether the materials are suitable, responsibly sourced and manufactured to recognised standards.


Solid Wood

Solid hardwoods are durable, naturally attractive and generally withstand normal chewing very well.


Suitable woods commonly used for hamster accessories include:

  • Birch

  • Beech

  • Aspen

  • Apple

  • Pear

  • Willow

  • Alder


These species have a long history of use in small animal husbandry and are widely considered appropriate for enrichment products and enclosure furnishings.


Because every hamster chews differently, even hardwood accessories should be inspected regularly for damage and replaced if they become unsafe.


Quality Plywood

Plywood is often misunderstood. Unlike MDF or chipboard, plywood is made by bonding together multiple thin layers of real wood veneer with the grain of each layer running in different directions. This construction makes it exceptionally strong and stable while remaining lightweight.


High-quality birch and poplar plywood are widely used by premium hamster accessory manufacturers because they are:

✔ Strong and durable

✔ Resistant to warping and splitting

✔ Lightweight

✔ Suitable for precision laser-cut products

✔ Ideal for multi-chamber hides, platforms and sand baths


The important question isn't simply whether a product is made from plywood. It's what type of plywood has been used, how it has been manufactured and whether the manufacturer is transparent about its sourcing and emissions.


Wood Types We'd Avoid

Not every wood is suitable for hamster products.


At Fable's, we recommend avoiding accessories made from:

❌ Cedar

❌ Pine

❌ Unspecified softwoods

❌ Treated timber

❌ Reclaimed construction timber of unknown origin


Aromatic softwoods such as cedar and many types of pine naturally contain volatile organic compounds, including phenols and aromatic oils.


Research has shown these compounds can irritate the respiratory system in both humans and laboratory animals, particularly with prolonged exposure. While research directly involving pet hamsters is limited, the precautionary principle supports avoiding these woods where suitable alternatives are readily available.


Likewise, products simply described as "wood" without identifying the species provide little reassurance about what your hamster is chewing.


Transparency matters.


Understanding Plywood Ratings

One of the biggest areas of confusion for hamster owners is plywood certification.


You may have seen terms such as E1, E0, E0.5, NAF, CARB Phase 2 or EPA TSCA Title VI and wondered what they actually mean.


These labels don't indicate whether glue has been used. Instead, they relate to formaldehyde emissions from the finished board or the manufacturing standards used during production.


It's also important to remember that wood naturally contains small amounts of formaldehyde. These standards exist because engineered wood products also use adhesives during manufacture, and emissions need to be carefully controlled.


What is E1?

Within the UK and Europe, E1 is the recognised formaldehyde emission classification for most wood-based panels.


Products meeting the E1 standard must comply with strict maximum emission limits before they can legally be sold for many indoor applications, including:

  • Furniture

  • Children's furniture

  • Kitchens

  • Schools

  • Interior construction

  • Many pet products


An E1 label does not mean a product contains excessive formaldehyde. It means the finished board complies with recognised UK and European limits for low formaldehyde emissions.


Many reputable manufacturers of hamster accessories use responsibly sourced E1-certified birch or poplar plywood.


What About E0 and E0.5?

E0 is often described online as being “safer” than E1. In reality, it’s a little more complicated.


Unlike E1, E0 is not a harmonised UK or European legal classification. Instead, the term is used under some national standards and by manufacturers to describe boards with lower formaldehyde emissions than E1.


You may also encounter plywood described as E0.5. Like E0, E0.5 is not a recognised UK or harmonised European emission class, and the term does not have one universal definition across manufacturers or countries.


It is generally used to indicate a formaldehyde emission level below E1, but an E0.5 label on its own does not tell you which test method, limit or certification has been used.

For this reason, products labelled E0 or E0.5 are not always directly comparable. If a manufacturer uses either term, look for the standard the board has been tested against and its actual formaldehyde emission limit, rather than assuming the label automatically makes one product safer than another.


Where genuinely lower-emission boards are available, they are certainly welcome, but the absence of an E0 or E0.5 label does not automatically mean a product is unsuitable.


What is NAF?

You may also see plywood advertised as NAF, meaning No Added Formaldehyde.


This refers to the adhesive system used during manufacture rather than suggesting the finished wood contains absolutely no formaldehyde.


Because timber naturally produces small amounts of formaldehyde, "No Added Formaldehyde" means formaldehyde-based resins were not intentionally used in the adhesive system.


NAF plywood is most commonly supplied for North American markets and is becoming increasingly popular among premium manufacturers.


Where available, it is an excellent option.


Other Certifications You May See

If you're researching wooden hamster accessories, particularly from international manufacturers, you may also come across additional certifications.


While these aren't specific to pet products, they can provide further reassurance about the materials used.


CARB Phase 2

The California Air Resources Board (CARB) Phase 2 standard sets strict limits on formaldehyde emissions from composite wood products.


Although developed for the North American market, it has become one of the most widely recognised low-emission standards worldwide.


Many premium pet product manufacturers voluntarily comply with CARB Phase 2, even when not legally required to do so.


Products labelled CARB Phase 2 compliant are generally considered an excellent choice.


EPA TSCA Title VI

The United States Environmental Protection Agency (EPA) introduced TSCA Title VI to establish national formaldehyde emission standards for composite wood products.


The emission limits closely align with CARB Phase 2, meaning products meeting either standard have been manufactured to similarly low-emission requirements.


Like E1 certification in Europe, these standards provide reassurance that engineered wood products have been manufactured within recognised emission limits.


FSC® and PEFC Certification

You may also notice products carrying FSC® or PEFC certification.


Unlike E1 or CARB Phase 2, these certifications are not about formaldehyde emissions.

Instead, they demonstrate that the timber has come from responsibly managed forests and sustainable supply chains.


Neither certification determines whether a product is suitable for hamsters, but they can provide additional confidence that the wood has been sourced responsibly.


Where possible, we encourage choosing products made from FSC® or PEFC-certified timber.


So Which Should You Choose?

So Which Should You Choose? With so many labels and certifications, it's easy to feel overwhelmed.


At Fable's, we don't recommend choosing products based on a single certification alone. Instead, we encourage owners to consider the product as a whole.


Our preferred order is:

  • NAF (No Added Formaldehyde) plywood, where available.

  • CARB Phase 2 or EPA TSCA Title VI compliant plywood.

  • Responsibly sourced E1-certified birch or poplar plywood from a transparent manufacturer.

  • Untreated solid hardwoods such as birch, beech, aspen, apple, pear or willow.


All of these can be excellent choices when manufactured well and used appropriately.


When deciding whether a product is suitable, ask yourself:

✔ Is the wood species clearly stated?

✔ Is the manufacturer transparent about the materials they use?

✔ If plywood is used, does it meet recognised low-emission standards?

✔ Is the timber responsibly sourced?

✔ Is the product unfinished or finished with clearly identified animal-safe coatings?

✔ Does it appear well made and durable?


These factors are often far more informative than any single certification printed on a product listing.


Materials We'd Avoid

Some engineered wood products simply aren't designed to withstand repeated chewing or exposure to moisture.


For this reason, we recommend avoiding:

❌ MDF (Medium Density Fibreboard)

❌ Particleboard

❌ Chipboard

❌ OSB (Oriented Strand Board)

❌ Laminated furniture board


These materials typically contain a much higher proportion of adhesives than plywood, are more susceptible to swelling when wet, and are rarely used by specialist manufacturers producing high-quality hamster accessories.


Painted and Treated Wood

Whenever possible, choose unfinished wooden accessories.


Avoid products that have been:

❌ Pressure treated

❌ Wood stained

❌ Varnished

❌ Painted with unknown coatings

❌ Finished using decorative sealants not intended for animals


Some manufacturers do use food-safe or animal-safe finishes, and these should be clearly identified on the product listing or available upon request.


If you're unsure what has been applied to a product, it's always worth asking before purchasing.


What About Glue?

Glue is another topic that often causes concern within the hamster community.


The important thing to remember is that the adhesive used during manufacture is only one part of the finished product.


Most modern woodworking adhesives used by reputable manufacturers cure into a stable bond during production. Once fully cured, the greater concern is usually the overall quality of construction rather than the adhesive itself.


When inspecting wooden accessories, look for:

✔ Tight, well-fitting joints

✔ No excess glue visible

✔ No crumbling or deteriorating adhesive

✔ Strong, solid construction


Poor workmanship is generally a far greater concern than the presence of properly cured adhesive.


When Should Wooden Accessories Be Replaced?

Even the highest-quality wooden accessories won't last forever.


Hamsters naturally chew, scratch and sometimes urinate on their furnishings. Over time, this can weaken the wood or create areas that are difficult to clean effectively.


Inspect wooden accessories regularly and replace them if you notice:

❌ Sharp splinters

❌ Cracks or splits

❌ Loose joints

❌ Exposed glue lines

❌ Swollen or warped wood

❌ Heavy urine staining that cannot be cleaned

❌ Areas that have been extensively chewed and may become unsafe


Replacing damaged accessories is an important part of maintaining a safe enclosure.


Questions to Ask Before Buying

If you're unsure about a product, don't be afraid to contact the manufacturer.


Helpful questions include:

  • What species of wood is used?

  • Is the plywood birch or poplar?

  • Does it meet recognised low-emission standards such as E1, CARB Phase 2 or EPA TSCA Title VI?

  • Is the timber FSC® or PEFC certified?

  • Is the product unfinished?

  • If it has a finish, what coating has been used?

  • Is the product designed specifically for small animals?


A reputable manufacturer should be happy to answer these questions.


Transparency is one of the strongest indicators of a business that takes both product quality and animal welfare seriously.
