Can I use PLA/3D printed items with my hamsters?

Over the last few years, 3D printed products have become an increasingly popular part of modern hamster care. Sand baths, wheel stands, platforms, hides and enrichment items can all be produced using 3D printing, allowing manufacturers to create designs that would be difficult or impossible to make using traditional methods.
One of the most common materials used is PLA (Polylactic Acid).
Because it's relatively new to the hamster hobby, owners often ask whether PLA is safe.

There is also very little hamster-specific research investigating PLA, so it's important to be honest about what we do - and don't - know. What we do know is that PLA is generally regarded as one of the safer plastics used in consumer 3D printing.
Standard PLA does not normally contain:
BPA (Bisphenol A)
Styrene
Phthalates
It also produces relatively low levels of volatile organic compounds during printing compared with several other common 3D printing plastics. Taken together, current evidence suggests that high-quality PLA is an appropriate material for many hamster accessories.
