The importance of enclosure floor space
Why Enclosure Size Matters for Hamsters
Choosing the right enclosure is one of the most important decisions you'll make for your hamster. It is far more than somewhere to sleep. It is where they burrow, forage, exercise, groom, explore, and spend virtually their entire life.
Because of this, enclosure size has one of the biggest influences on a hamster's welfare.
At Fable's, we recommend a minimum enclosure size of 100 × 50 × 50 cm (L × W × H) for every hamster species.
This recommendation isn't simply about giving a hamster enough room to walk around. It is about ensuring there is enough space to provide everything they need to express their natural behaviours without compromise.
More Than Just Floor Space
Years ago, enclosure recommendations often focused almost entirely on floor area. Modern hamster care takes a different approach. Rather than asking "How much space does a hamster need?", we ask a different question:
Can this enclosure comfortably provide everything a hamster needs to thrive?
A suitable enclosure should comfortably accommodate:
Deep bedding for burrowing.
An appropriately sized exercise wheel.
A fully enclosed multi-chamber hide.
A large sand bath.
Additional hides and tunnels.
Natural clutter and overhead cover.
Multiple substrates and textures.
Space to forage and explore.
Once these essentials are included, anything smaller than 100 × 50 cm quickly becomes restrictive. Instead of adding enrichment, owners often find themselves deciding what has to be removed. The bedding becomes shallower. The wheel competes for space. The sand bath becomes smaller. Hides disappear. Natural clutter is reduced so the hamster can still move around.
Instead of supporting every important natural behaviour, the enclosure begins forcing compromises between them.
At Fable's, we don't believe good welfare should depend on choosing which natural behaviours your hamster is allowed to perform.
Why Height Is Just as Important
Length and width are only part of the picture. Enclosure height matters just as much. As discussed in our articles on Choosing the Right Exercise Wheel and The Importance of Bedding Depth, we recommend:
A 25 cm minimum wheel for Roborovski and dwarf hamsters.
A 28 cm minimum wheel for Syrian and Chinese hamsters.
At least 25 cm of bedding across as much of the enclosure as possible.
These recommendations work together.
A 28 cm wheel positioned above 25 cm of bedding already requires over 50 cm of internal height before allowing for the wheel stand and safe clearance. This is why we recommend 50 cm as the minimum enclosure height.
It allows owners to provide both adequate bedding depth and an appropriately sized wheel without sacrificing either.
Why We Don't Recommend Shallow Ends
A common suggestion is to create one deep end for burrowing and one shallow end for the exercise wheel.
While this may appear to solve the problem, it simply creates a different compromise. Burrowing is one of the most important natural behaviours a hamster performs. In the wild, hamsters do not choose one small area to dig because the rest of their habitat is too shallow. Given suitable conditions, they create extensive underground tunnel systems across their territory. Restricting deep bedding to one corner limits where these behaviours can occur.
For this reason, Fable's does not recommend creating large shallow bedding areas simply to fit an appropriately sized wheel.
If an enclosure cannot comfortably accommodate both deep bedding and an appropriately sized exercise wheel together, then the enclosure itself is too small.
Bigger Is Always Better
Our recommendation of 100 × 50 × 50 cm is a minimum standard, not a target.
Larger enclosures allow owners to provide:
Deeper bedding.
Larger sand baths.
More hides.
Greater substrate variety.
Additional climbing and exploration opportunities.
More natural clutter and overhead cover.
Greater choice over where to sleep, forage and burrow.
One of the most important aspects of modern animal welfare is behavioural choice. The more opportunities an animal has to decide where to explore, rest, forage and hide, the more control they have over their environment. Larger enclosures don't simply provide more space. They provide more opportunities for natural behaviour.

Below 100 × 50 × 50 cm, these essentials increasingly compete for the same limited space. Compromises become unavoidable.
For this reason, we recommend 100 × 50 × 50 cm as the minimum enclosure size for every hamster.
Whenever possible, choosing a larger enclosure will always provide even greater opportunities for positive welfare.

Like all of our care guidance, these recommendations are based on the best evidence currently available.
Where peer-reviewed research exists, we prioritise studies examining hamster behaviour, housing and welfare. We also consider guidance from recognised welfare organisations, experienced exotic veterinarians and established rescue organisations.
While there is no single scientific study stating that every hamster requires a 100 × 50 × 50 cm enclosure, there is strong evidence that larger, more complex environments support natural behaviour and improve welfare.
Our recommendation reflects the smallest enclosure we believe can realistically accommodate the husbandry requirements outlined throughout our care guides, including appropriate bedding depth, wheel size, environmental enrichment and opportunities to express natural behaviours.
As our understanding of hamster welfare continues to develop, our recommendations will continue to evolve alongside the available evidence.
